Excerise? No Thanks…

There’s a bunch of excuses for kids to be reluctant with working out (hopefully, not us, Superkids). Some may think they don’t have what it takes. Some say that they are too short-skinny, and always end up as bench warmers. Or maybe they have some history with team members when drilling. Others don’t even know how to play and the rules.

The point is, lack of self confident. These kids hesitate to try because they convince to be making foolish and shameful mistakes. Let’s say we share the common problem, what should we do? Let’s check the reasons.

Lack of Talent and Always be the Last to Pick

Never scores? Always fail in taking over the ball from the opponents? There’s only one answer to those: practice. Basic drill that is carried out regularly by sport teams at school is always around eye-hand coordination and handling the ball. We can practice the throwing, catching, kicking, bouncing or passing the ball at home or with friends.

How?

  • Bounce the ball on the ground while walking.
  • Throw the ball against the wall and catch.
  • Loop the ball to the wall and chase it.
  • Throw/kick the ball aiming the same spots repeatedly.
  • Hang a blanket to the rope and try hit it with a ball.
  • Kick the ball to the wall.
  • Dribble the ball around the yard, make sure it stays ahead.
  • Use balls in many sizes to learn controlling.

As a matter of fact, just imagine the drill even when we are off practice. Even it’s only in our head, the moves can help our hitting, chasing, kicking, throwing  and other techniques.

Don’t Belong

Trust me, not every team is like that. Try find a team where the competition is less stressing. A team that put skill development, playing and having fun first. Or better yet, switch to individual sport.

Afraid of Making Mistakes

We don’t have to learn all the technique and regulation in one day, do we? Take it easy, let’s learn by doing. Sure there are some basic rules we should know from the get go. The rest can be done step by step during the practice. To escalate the esteem, give self encouragement is also in order. Such words like, “Good hit”, “Come on, keep it up!” “Excellent, you are getting better,” “Nice try”, or “That’s a miss, it’s fine, there’s still tomorrow.”

If ball is not really your thing, there are still many other sports worth the shot on the list. Start with martial art, fencing, archery, run, swim or bike racing. All that and still not your field? You can always be a part in sport as a refree or officials.
