Let’s learn how to predict the weather

It’s about seeing wind condition, conducting measuring, collecting data and finding pattern.

It’s done by constructing a device that tells where the wind is blowing. The project is simple and using scrap that maybe can be found around you.

What you need:

Clay

Square thick cardboard (from cereal or milk box)

Pencil with eraser

Pinhead needle, lock pick or pin

Straw

Scissor

Colored paper

Marker or crayon

Compass

How to build device that tells wind direction

Step 1

Run a pre observation to the weather. Is it cloudy? Are there clouds movements in the sky? Can you feel the wind blows? Can you determine which direction it does?

Step 2

Next step is to pin point where is north based on compass. Write down the directions on the cardboard, North, South, East and West. Also put Northeast, Northwest, Southeast and Southwest.

Step 3

Cut a bit right in the middle of both ends of the straw.

Step 4

Cut out the colorful paper in triangle shape and trapezium. Tuck in at both ends of the straw.

Step 5

Take some clay and shape it into ball. Put in the middle of the cardboard. Stick the tip of the pencil into the clay.

Step 6

Use pin head needle to put the straw on the eraser of the pencil so they stuck together. Make sure it’s right in the middle. Try to make the arrow you already made can spin loosely.

Step 7

Now, look how the tip of the arrow should show from which direction the wind is blowing.

Step 8

Check out the wind direction for a week and put it in a weather journal. Run some research and make prediction of weather based on the direction of the wind.
