How Do Wireless Speakers Works?

Zahra makes tin can phone using two metal cans and a long piece of string. It makes her understand how sound waves travel through solids. She plugs her stereo and knows how electricity brings signal of sound from a radio to a speaker through cable. But, she still wonders how do wireless speaker work. With no solid media, how can sound moves from her mouth to loudspeaker at the other room?

Hmmm.. Zahra haven’t understood the principle of wireless loudspeaker. Wireless speakers are loudspeakers which transmits audio signals using radio frequency (RF) waves, Superkids. There are two units in wireless speakers. First, a main speaker unit combining the loudspeaker itself with an RF receiver. Second, an RF transmitter unit.

They’re often powered by batteries or an optional AC adapter. That batteries power enables us to move them around wherever we want, even to alternate room or outdoor. Wireless speakers tend to have a range of no less than 150 feet of the transmitter. The signal broadcasts the same way an FM radio does and can travel through walls. The transmitter connects to the audio output of any device such as hi-fi equipment, TV, computers, MP3 players, etc. The receiver is positioned where the listener wants the sound to be. The receiverspeaker unit generally contains an amplifier to boost the audio signal to the loudspeaker.

The signal frequency used by wireless speakers is 900 MHz. Many wireless speakers feature variable transmission channels that can be set using a tuning knob to overcome potential RF interference with other nearby wireless devices such as cordless phones.

Different types of wireless speakers are designed for specific needs, Superkids. Stereo speakers can deliver both left and right stereo channels in a single speaker. Speakers designed specifically for outdoor use have a robust casing. Home theatre utilizes a specialized set of speakers in which only the rear speakers are wireless, while the front speakers are wired.
