The First Animator to Win Citra
For the first time ever since the first Festival Film Indonesia (FFI) or Indonesian Movie Festival in 1955, the committee puts animated movie genre into a category in 2013. Wiryadi Dharmawan aka Wawan aka Cak Waw’s “Sang Suporter” (“The Supporter”) won, making Wawan the first animator to win Citra trophy, the ultimate award for Indonesian movie people. Psstt… this guy also makes Sita-Suta comic, the icon of Superkids Indonesia.

Eh? You dropped it?
No, not that. When i receive the 2013 FFI in Semarang, i also got many presents. Well, rather than the trouble of carrying that many stuffs at hand, i shipped the trophy back home to Surabaya. It got there all right, but with a bit damage. I did complain all the way to the main office but no respond. So i just have to accept it.
Any other prize aside the trophy and presents?
A 10 million rupiah cash. But i haven’t claimed it till today.
Whoa.. How come? Is that not enough?
Hahaha…not that. I must travel to Jakarta to claim the money. I live in Surabaya and work in Malang. Going to Jakarta takes time too. One day i went there but lost the contact number of the committee. I did damage my cellphone and all the contact numbers were gone. So, there it goes. If it’s mine, the money will not going anywhere.
“The Supporter”, what does the story about?
It’s about a hardcore soccer fan who buys a lottery for World Cup ticket just for fun. He actually wins it, but the process to claim the reward is not that simple. This guy must go all kind of trouble to claim the supposedly ready to pick reward.
Oh, maybe that what prevents you from your own prize :-p

“The Suporter”, is that adapted from a book?
Yes. It’s from the comic “Gilanya Bola”, a compiled book i worked on in collaboration with nine other comic writers. I made the comic with two friends, Cahyo Widi at the story, i worked on the pencil and Yudis on the ink.
What’s the different between the comic and animated version?
The comic’s original title in the book was “2010”. I changed it into “The Suporter” for the sake of the movie. The plot was heavier though the ending stayed, successfully watching the World Cup.
How long did you work it?
Four months, for a 11 minutes movie. I’d say animated movie is more complicated than regular movies. We had to make one image per motion for a single scene. In this movie, one second takes five images. So for an 11 minutes movie, well you do the math.
Have you ever think of being paid off with Citra?
Hmm…I actually sent four movies for 2013 FFI. Aside for “Sang Suporter”, there were “Napak Tilas Trisna”, “Free”, and “Pentil Pentol”. It turned out the winner was “The Supporter”. Been a finalist for a couple of times, so i took it lightly. Alhamdulillah i won. The trophy is now sitting nicely in my bedroom as a symbol of struggle.
Good. Where did you learn animating?
Autodidact. I’ve always wanted to be an animator since little kid. I think the first time was when i watched cartoon on TV. I never took formal class for animation. In fact i studied a totally different major in colleague.
Last question. What’s Citra did for your career?
I got more challenged to prove that Indonesia also has worthy animated movie. After Citra, it’s time to step up for international level trophies. Our animation must go further. I hope that domestic work can go international, not just stay in Indonesia.
