Academic Success with Piano and Ballet

Christy Lorenz was just like a working person. She left home before 07.00 AM and returned home the earliest at 06.30 PM. That was because her after school course classes was always full all weekdays. But that also became her asset for full scholarship from Sekolah Ciputra. A few days ago, Superkids Indonesia went to see Christy exclusively at her school in Puri Widya Kencana, Citraland, Surabaya.

Halo, Christy.

Halo.

That’s a very ballerina hairdo.

Oh, i’m having a ballet class after this.

Everyday?

Monday, Mandarin class. Tuesday, ballet. Wednesday, piano class. Thursday, ballet. Friday, Ballet too.

All those courses, they don’t tire you?

No. It’s not like more class lesson. Not some math class or something, rather dancing and music. They are my hobby.

When did you start ballet?

When i was five. I used to perform with my own moves. Then mom signed me up to Belle Ballet School. I learned pure classic ballet there, nothing contemporer. That why i was better focus in learning the basics.

Why ballet?

Well, it’s the mother of dance. If we master ballet, every other dance will be easy. Be it modern or traditional. Personally, ballet is more like telling stories through some beautiful and elegant moves.

Are you interested of being professional ballerina?

No. If I were serious, i was suggested to study ballet in Canada. They have ballet academy there, regular class in the morning and ballet in the afternoon. Not to mention we should have a couple to be in professional. The partner should be a boy and it involves many physical contacts. I’m having a goose bump just to think of it. So for me, ballet is just for fun.

What does ballet do for you?

Don’t be mistaken. Ballet is way more than just standing on your finger tips. It’s character building. We must be discipline and persistence. There’s no way of doing it half resolution. It shapes my character gradually to become a discipline and persistence girl. Ballet is also to channel my emotion. Believe it or not, when i got mad, i went jumping and dancing despite being in classroom. Hahaha.

LOL. What kind of award have you got from ballet?

I don’t compete much. But during school break, there was Summer Course that presented instructor from abroad. Among them was a professional ballet teacher from Australia, Ms Christine Perry. She gave me “The Most Outstanding Student” certificate. I also got distinction for every level up.

Impressive. Now tell me about piano.

It’s basically the same. I’ve been regularly taken piano class since little because of hobby. Not for money or reward or dreaming to become a composer. I realized that art can be a great support for academic achievement. Music is proven to help your mindset, it’s good for brain. Do you know music helps restore memories? Old people with dementia use to listening music while having some light exercises. For example, when having some light dancing practice. My mom’s friend who is now the head of a university, here in Surabaya, also a good pianist. Not a professional though, his memory is so sharp and well arranged.

It’s not a ballerina, composer or pianist. So what are you dreaming to be?

Hehehe, to be a news anchor. I was appointed to be moderator of a school talks show in 2013. The speaker was the Governor of Bali, Komjen Pol (Purn) I Made Mangku Pastika. The theme was leadership. I revised a list of questions for him. Surprisingly he was impressed by those questions and asked,“Did you make it or your teacher?” Then he said that i have what it takes to be a presenter or a news anchor. It was very motivating. Now, I always practice at home, videotaping my self, hehehe.

Supposed you make it one day. Who would you like to interview?

Perhaps Giuliana Rancic, Ryan Seacrest and Oprah Winfrey because they inspire me to be a presenter. Maybe some big names at ballet too like Miko Fogarty, Juliet Doherty, and Misty Copeland. These guys are role models and ballet inspirations, they worked hard to achieve what they did. In addition I also want to interview some world celebrities like Michael Jordan. I’d like to talk about how he failed numerous times throughout his career and yet he didn’t give up and tried again. I admire his perseverance and persistence.

That’s all?

Oh, Taylor Swift also. I’d like to know her life success recepy. I’d like to ask her about how she succeeded in life despite the haters who criticized everything she did, and how she felt like she didn’t fit in even though she is a world renowned artist. It’s really amusing how someone as popular as she is feels like she doesn’t ‘fit in’ in certain societies. I admire her talent, hard work and persistence in achieving her dreams.

What about full scholarship from Sekolah Ciputra?

Oh, that program was actually not exclusively for students of Sekolah Ciputra only, rather for public. But no students from other schools made it. The test was all English, from interview, psycho test and paper work. The first selection from 100 applicants were narrowed down to 40. And then filtered again to 10. There were only the best eight that was acknowledged for the scholarship. I got full scholarship three years for grade 7-9 (med school). How it felt? Blessed and grateful. I was convinced that piano and ballet have great impat in my acidic achievement.

Any message for Superkids who read this?

Hmm, i’m thinking about mom who is very supportive for my interest. Whenever i was down, mom always pushes me not to give up. She said, work hard, enjoy later. It’s a good one for all Superkids Indonesia.
