Piano Lesson with International Standard at The Piano Institute

They don’t hesitate inviting world class pianists to Surabaya only to teach students of The Piano Institute.

Multiple studies suggest that music has great impacts on brain development. Catherine Tanujaya BMus was aware of the issue. Soon after finishing her study in Australian Institute of Music (2008) and Sydney Conservatorium of Music (2011), she returned to her homeland, Surabaya and started the The Piano Institute (TPI). Catherine had a mission of making TPI Indonesia best musical school, sharpening students’ passion to be world class pianists.

Here, young musicians are trained to deeply understand classic music. With that skill, they will be taken to international level through many contests, concerts and other events.

TPI also has regular six monthly programs, like students’ concert, piano test and group class. In addition, TPI often presents skilled pianists from foreign countries to be special guest instructors, seminar speakers, jury for students’ performance or to have masterclass. For example Daniel Gerscovitch (grand master of Sydney Conservatorium), Vatche Jambazian (proud of England) and Ananda Sukarlan (Indonesian pianist who is very popular out there).

“I want to open the insight of Surabaya musician vast. It’s not enough that they are familiar with local musicians. They need to see how top musician from other countries playing,” Catherine revealed. She is now resides in Brisbane, Australia and is studying piano under Russian instructor Natasha Vlassenko, in preparation for master degree there.

Care to enroll? Potential students with no experience with piano lesson will have a trial system before deciding whether to join or not. For those who have some experience with piano, an audition will be held to determine their class. The level starts from basic grade the preparatory to grade 8. And for advance level, there is performance 1 to 3.

Since the day one TPI established in 2012, TPI has been partnered with  international school, Singapore National Academy (SNA). TPI has its own building there and opens course site for both SNA students and public. “We have a 10 percent discount for SNA students,” said Catherine.

TPI has over 100 students are now, from 3.5 years old to teenagers, from preparatory to advance level. Some name are quite familiar among Indonesian pianists like Marcia Humato, Regianne Kusuma Wahyuni, and Matthew Abraham. Regianne  once made to the final of Ananda Sukarlan Award 2013. While Marcia had a chance to performed in Singapore Music Festival in Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music Schools, Singapura. Recently TPI new rising stars are emerging like Kelley Joy Chen, Sydney Loo and Felisha Iskandar.
