Wushu Practice with Sasana Serumai in the City of Tomorrow

After practice, hang out and fun time!

Wushu, a traditional martial art sport from China, is on the rise in Indonesia. Some training centers (gyms) has been established for decades. Recently more gyms appear with competitive quality.

In Surabaya, wushu practice arena is also open in a shopping center. We can see the wushu athletes training almost every day on UG floor City of Tomorrow (Cito), mall and also apartment of Lippo Group that’s towering at the southern gate of Surabaya.

This Sasana Serumai (Sehat Rukun Damai) led by Pujianto has started five years ago. Puji is an initator of wushu in Indonesia. He accepts the offer to open a place in Cito so he can better socialize wushu to people.

“I happen to know the owner of Cito, Agus Susanto (commisioner and the CEO of PT Surya Mitra Jaya, Cito management). He is former chairman of Eastern Java Province Indonesian Wushu Caretaker. Mr Agus invites me to open a wushu training center there,” Puji recalls.

At first, the training is held on the main atrium. The athletes prove to hit success and attract visitors. According to Puji, there are quite a number of people sign up because they are impressed by the wushu moves they see during the atrium practice session. On top of that, the training ground is not specifically designed for wushu, instead a mall equipped with many family entertaining tools.

There, the athletes are training under some former East Java wushu athletes; Heru Andreas Sidata, William Suherman and Mohammad Hayu. The training cost is only Rp 150.000 per month. Dimas Waskita (9), a 4 grade student of SD Rungkut Menanggal 1 Surabaya admit glad to practice there. “I have been practicing  wushu for one year. In Cito, after training we can enjoy the mall. My borther Mas Willy is also an athlere. He’s at red belt now,” said Dimas.

Unlike the other gym, training in Cito is specifically for wushu taolu (performing arts moves). While training wushu sanda aka sanshou (fighting) is carried out in the Sasana Serumai’s main office at Griya Wage Indah, Jl Taruna 7, Aloha, Sidoarjo. Puji makes the first floor of the office as an athlete housing and the second floor as the training ground.

“Since training wushu need an empty space of 15×15 meters without poles. Black and red belt athletes are training there to make achievement. While athletes of yellow, blue and brown belt train in Cito for seedling,” said Puji, who serves as vice chairman of the Eastern Java Province Indonesian Wushu Caretaker and the chairman Sidoarjo District Indonesian Wushu Caretaker.
