Surabaya Grammar School Upgraded Status to SPK

Founded in 2009, Surabaya Grammar School (SGS) has gone far.

This school that applies 100 percent English is no longer run education at Preschool, Kindergarten and Primary. Since 2014, SGS has a Mid School operational. Automatically, the buildings are expanding too. Today, they have the four floor SGS I building for Preschool-Kindergarten, and five floor SGS II for Primary-Mid School. They are located across the street in Villa Bukit Mas II F2 area, Surabaya

“Before, everyone is united in SGS I. Since the number of students keeps growing, SGS builds another building across. Now there are about 900 students. For the Primary school alone, we have 350 students,” the principal of SGS Primary School Feriana Susanti SPd, explains.

Most recently, SGS is now in the process of status upgrade from a national school to a Coordinated School (Sekolah Penyelenggara Kerjasama, SPK), the new title for international schools. The curriculum used is a combination of Cambridge and the national plus.

According to Feri, the status of SPK will make SGS easier to recruit expatriates for teachers. So far, SGS only have foreign teachers for Mandarin and English classes. “As a SPK, we will be easier to have work visas for expatriate teachers,” said Feri.

To support the students’ skills, SGS also active in sending representatives to participate in various academic and non-academic competitions outside of school. The results are anything but dissapointing. Take for example is a student named Clarice Ong, who won the Poetry Recitation Competition at the Singapore National Academy.

Early in this January 2015, SGS also initiated Combined Leadership Camp 2015 followed by 40 students Prefect members, Scouts and the Red Cross. This activity trains students’ independence and hone their skills to work as a team. “This is an effort to encourage the students to become a school leader, a role model for other students. Whether or not the knowledge gained during the camp will be actually implemented or not, the class teacher will observe,” said Idris Aziz Mattar, the school advisor.
