Gundam the Show Off Asian Champ at SPI

Three gundam robots stood high and might in people’s way on the Toys and Hobbies Fair arena in Supermal Pakuwon Indah (SPI) atrium, Surabaya. In the exhibition that was open November 1-2 2014, the trio gundam were the idol. It could be due to their gigantic size, or because many Superkids did like the Japanese robots.

They were not actual robots that moved around with engine. They were cosplayer or cosplay fans who dressed up like gundam. They did the costumes by themselves from EVA foam and art paper. Rian Cyd from Daikon Sky Jakarta community wore the gundam outfit from Dead Schythe series. It had 1.5 m long sword. Last year, the same robot won the Anime Festival Asia in Singapore. Rian admitted, gundam is not comfortable to wear. That is why there are only few cosplayers who pose as gundam. “Not to mention it takes time and a lot of effort to build one,” the 22 years old guy revealed.

The Strike Build was taken by Rian’s associate, Zainaru from the same cosplayer community. Naru was Indonesian representative in Nagoya 2013 World Cosplay Summit, Japan. And Sword Impulse gundam was made and worn by Stanley Gunawan or Lee, a cosplayer from Peri Kertas Surabaya community.

More than a few Superkids were anxious about these guys, came closer to observe the details of those two meters gundam. If any of them wants to do some selfie pic, Ryan, Naru and Lee were happily welcome them. “We are excited to see the enthusiasm of the visitors. Kids and adults alike are interested at these gundam outfits because they are not something you can see every day,” said Lee.
