133 Kartini Doing Batik

Despite there are many new idols emerging, Raden Ajeng (RA) Kartini is simply not forgotten. Though she has died for 108 years now, her spirit lives on and still encourages Indonesian women to move forward, independent and become meaningful.

In Friday (20/4) on the afternoon, Indonesian Classic Batik Community held an event called The 133 Kartini Doing Batik. This event took place in Grand City Surabaya with 133 women dressed in kebaya participated in it. The 133 figure symbolize the age of Kartini who was born in 1879.

Kartini learned how to make batik since she was twelve years old. Through that, she introduced Indonesian culture to Dutch Society, who at the time only viewed Indonesia as an occupied nation. Kartini once gave her own handmaking batik sarong to the wife of the Director of Teaching and Religious Department. People still can see photos of that sarong in the book of Habis Gelap Terbitlah Terang, along with her letters.

Vika Wisnu, the event organizer said, “It wasn’t nostalgic, but an effort to introduce more about Kartini as the pioneer of the rise of native women.”
