Prigen Taman Safari Had Additional Member

 

Taman Safari Indonesia (TSI) II in Prigen, Pasuruan, East Java scored a hit of breeding an endangered animal. Last Thursday, November 6th 2014, a Sumatera  Elephant baby (Elephas maximus sumatranus) was born in good condition. It weighted 83 kg and 82 cm tall.

 

In the official released, it is said that the baby elephant was born from the mother siska, a 20 years old female. Siska had the baby by mating a 40 years old male, Subaru. This was the 10th elephant birth in TSI II.

 

As usual, the elephants around would make loud noises upon the birth of a new member as for a welcoming and congratulate it. The new born elephant was estimated to come at around 01.00 midnights. The caretaker claimed to heard the noises of elephant coming from the elephant’s house at the time. the mother was situated in a private place, not far from the rest.

 

The birth of this Sumatera elephant in TSI II was pleasant news for Indonesia elephant conservation world. Sumatera elephant was a sub species of Asian elephant that was spread throughout India to Indonesia. Sumatera Elephant was put under Critically Endangered or at heavily risk of extinction. This is why the animal was protected under PP no. 7, 1999 regarding preservation of Plantation and Wild Life.
