Sushi Lesson at Nishimura Restaurant

Recently (27/9), Nishimura Restaurant, Shangri-La Hotel Jakarta threw a cooking class for Superkids. it was fun, loud and full of joy. The chef who tutors the sushi class was Chef Hideki Chomei from Japan.

The cooking class this time was different. Almost all of Nishimura Restaurant at Shangri-La Hotel Jakarta was set up with their ingredients and equipment since morning. Chef Chomei was busy with the preparation. About 15 Superkids who took the cooking class were their special guests.

Chef Chomei shared the secret of making his delicious sushi. For the rice, to make the delicious sushi should be with Japanese rice. The technique of making sushi shu (sushi vinegar) was laid out to details. You also could not just stir the rice like that.

“You don’t have to make a big ball of rice, this small is enough, gently press it, give some wasabi and cover it with shrimp,” Chef Chomei explained by showing how to do it neatly.

Sure Superkids were having difficulties with the rice that was sticky, too big rice ball, too high or too slim were. Chef Chomei was patiently correcting everyone. Sushi made by Superkids were then arranged to take home. The making of maki sushi was a bit trickier. They need to flatten the rice on the nori and roll it with makishu. And about the rolling thing, it also turned out to be not as easy as they have thought it was. But Superkids who took the cooking class were so eager to learn.

The bottom of the sushi must be tight and neat. But there were cracked rolls, too big, or not flat. There was even sushi that the filling came out. Chef Chomei patently guided the student to remake the roll. The cooking class was over and the afternoon program closed with lunch. Superkids were happy to be a cook in one day. Way to go!
