Hick Kicks Trig

Superkids, do you know why some people wear red-white-blue plaid shirt in Jakarta? It’s not just for fashion. They give support to Joko ‘Jokowi’ Widodo against Fauzi ‘Foke’ Bowo in the second round of Jakarta governor election yesterday.

Well, the final and official result of the second election is not expected until early of next month. But the quick counts show Jokowi leads over the incumbent Foke. The unofficial results from survey organizations shows Jokowi gets 53.68% and Foke gets 46.32% from 6,996,951 voters.

“But the official result of the election will be announce by goverment at October 1st,” said Dahlia Umar, The Chief of Election Comission of DKI Jakarta. The election commission is scheduled to announce the winner on October 1. Why the elections take place twice? The July election gave no candidat who got majority (50% + 1 vote). In the first round, Jokowi got 42% vote and Foke got 34% of the vote. The other three candidates got minor vote. So, Jokowi and Foke must fight for the second round.

Jokowi is a hick from Central Java. Currently, he was the mayor of Solo (Surakarta), about 500 km east of Jakarta. His style as rural Javanese ordinary man makes the voters love him. With casual red-white-blue plaid shirt, he meets people in flea market, in small alley ways and even in slums.

Foke is incumbent governor. In election campaign, people know him as a trig; wearing smart, neat and trim white long sleeves official shirt. He led Jakarta, the most important city of Indonesia, for the last five year. He also served as vice-governor in Sutiyoso era.
