A Good Facility Doesn’t Necessarily Guarantee Intelligence

A boy was given Rp 500 for pocket money from his mother. He used Rp 200 for his needs, while the rest he saved. This is an indication of a child with behavioral intelligence. Especially when he shows a very consistent adapting ability. Whether or not his parents are there, the child will still show an adaptive behavior. However, it doesn’t mean that a child with behavioral intelligence is able to answer if asked numerical questions such as multiplication or division.

This theory is given by the Head Division of Kids and Teens Growth, from the Department of Children’s Health, RSUD Dr. Soetomo Surabaya, Dr. Ahmad Suryawan SpA (K) in front of 850 Supermoms in Banjarmasin International Hotel, on Sunday, 9th of June 2013. In the road show seminar of Morinaga Platinum entitled “Ready to Smarten Up the Little One From Their Early Age?”, Dr. Wawan – the nickname for Ahmad Suryawan – elaborated on the details of the factors that affect the intelligence of a child.

According to Dr. Wawan, cognitive intelligence doesn’t relate to behavioral intelligence. “Those are two very different things. But all mothers have the same chance of having a child with complete intelligence; behavioral and cognitive,” Dr. Wawan added that wealth isn’t the first priority in raising an intelligent child. In fact, a child who grew in the mountain areas can grow up to become a very intelligent person. Intelligence isn’t formed instantly, yet it comes from a long term process the child reaches as he/she grows up. It started from when they are still babies, growing up to little kids, pre-school, becoming teenagers, until their adulthood. “A contributory environment is necessary, aside from gene factors,” Dr. Wawan mentioned.

One of the participants of the seminar, Era Puspasari, was really pleased with the event. “People would often say that I am thirsty for knowledge. I do love to join parenting seminars with my husband; I even came to Surabaya to join one! We can both know how to shape the positive character of our child, like how Dr. Wawan explained,” she said, coming to the seminar with her husband Dawuh Eko Suprianto and their son Muh Azzamy Kenzo Mubarok (2,5 years old).
