Educating through Story Telling

There is no courses or special school to teach someone becoming a story teller. Everybody can be a great story teller, at least at home. It doesn’t take dolls or small stage to do that. Just play with your voices and make up some story.

“I’m not a story teller myself. But we must be creative in telling stories because the impact to kids-parents relationship is tremendous, for any topic of story.” said the founder of IDCerita (Indonesia Bercerita) community, Budi Setiawan aka Bukik in a light talk in Surabaya City Library, Sunday (Oct 28) morning.

Can’t make up stories. This is also an unacceptable excuse to avoid telling stories. All it takes to make a good story are character, problem and solution. That’s it. IDCerita is planning to launch Takita, a character of Indonesian kids story on November 8. This is part of their program to ask parents spending some time to educate children through stories. “Moral messages, good deed and such things are very effective to be placed within stories.” said Bukik.

Mochamad Ariyo Faridh Zidni, a national story teller known as Kak Ayok, was also presence at the discussion. He said the crucial elements of story telling are the plot, voice and sound, gesture, props and other additional ability such as singing. Rudi Cahyo or Kak Rudi, a lecturer of Psychological Faculty, University of Airlangga (Unair) who was also a master in story telling added on.

Telling stories is a free of stress activity. Learn to apply methods of telling stories also make kids easier to absorb the message. “Fairy tails, fable and legends with high N-Ach (Need for Achievement)  is very important. The impact sound loud and clear.” he said.
