World Champ Painting Exhibition

After 10 years, Daun Sanggar Lukis Anak has contributed 101 international trophies for Indonesia. This year, celebrating the 10th anniversary last April 22nd, Daun threw a painting exhibition of 80 creations and 10 champion certificates. It’s all put on display for everyone to see in the lobby of Hotel Singgasana Surabaya, since June 10th to July 9th, 2014.

The exhibition was entitled “Winner Kids” and presented paintings in various size and medium: canvass and paper, acrylic, crayon or water mark. The selected themes were around culture, life environment, friendship and humanity. Out of 39 kids participating in the exhibition, 35 had had their name announced as winners of international painting events. “The four have not because they just recently joined us, less than one year,” Arik S Wartono, Advisor of Daun, explained.

Just who are these young artists with world class achievement? Thifalia Raudina Mahardya was among the top knot with most stunning achievement (Superkids Indonesia had an exclusive interview, read here). Only 8 years old, Thifa had achieved 15 international awards and 6 times selected to represent Indonesia in international level. The most recent one was just last April 22nd to May 21st, 2014 where her works joined the few selected to be presented in “Fine and Applied Art Competition and Exibition” at Mizal Gallery Museum, Turkey.

She presented her 1×1 m work entitled “Wonokromo”. The painting won the first prize for “Look and Learn International Children’s Art Competition 2013” with theme “Bridge” in London. Using acrylic paint, Thifa brought the crowded of suspension bridge in Wonokromo, Surabaya, alive on canvass. It had motor rider, school bus, ambulance and some note ‘Bonek’ and ‘Bajul Ijo’ (the proud nickname for supporter of Surabaya football club, Persebaya) under the bridge.

Another winner of Golden Artist award in Picasso Art Contest 2013 in India was also here. Rafi Hatta Nugraha, an 9 years old kid with his painting “Terbang di Atas Punggung Burung” (Flying on the Back of a Bird). Yet the most astounding work was the painting “Surabaya” shown in giant size: 490×150 cm. The collective work of 35 Daun students with age ranged from 2,5 years old to 16 years old had its time displayed in National Gallery, Jakarta last 2013.

For both Ameela Tsakia Kooistra and her best friend Dyandra Aulia Daanisy, the giant paint was the most attractive of all. Not only for the size, but more for the bright multicolor pictures it showed. “And most of all, we get to see almost all icon of Surabaya here,” said Ameela, the girl who was born in Australia 8 years ago, who is now student of Sekolah Cikal Surabaya.

Ameela and Dyandra had just recently joined the painting exercise with Daun for a few months. Last Wednesday June 25th 2014, they came to Hotel Singgasana Surabaya for practice with Arik. “I don’t put target for Dyandra that she must win some trophy like any other kids who have theirs here. The point is the talent isn’t wasted. Trophy is a bonus,” said Dian Rahma, Dyandra’s mother.
