The Fun of Combined Leadership Camp at Surabaya Grammar School

Campfire, leadership training, wound treatment lesson.. Wow, who can say no to these cool activities?

40 students of Surabaya Grammar School (SGS) didn’t go home on Friday,January 16th 2014. They came to school with travel bag and stayed there overnight. Since afternoon, these members of Prefect, Scout and Red Cross from grade 1-6 had been busy with Combined Leadership Camp 2015.

During the lecturing session, the students were divided into two groups. Red Cross and Scout were in one group while Prefect members gathered in a separate room. Just what were they doing?

In the class where Red Cross and Scout gathered, students were trained to give first medical treatment for injured friends. The session was guided by a team from Institut Ilmu Kesehatan (IIK) Kediri. Not only theory, students were also welcomed to practice using RJP (Resuscitation for Heart and Lung) phantom, and leg phantom. All equipments were brought by the IIK team from Kediri.

“Do chest compression 30 times to make it work again like this. Do it before mouth to mouth breathe, okay?” said Yuan Guruh Pratama, nursery lecturer of IIK, showing the correct way for the students. Previously, he also trained them to treat incised wound on knees using leg phantom.

In Prefect class, it was equally tense. The topic was delivered by the SGS Principal Feriana Susanti, Camp Comandan Kikip Sarmudyawati and School Advisor Idris Azis Mattar. Idris who talked about “How to be a Good Prefect” taught the students to give positive example as Prefect. “You should be proud because you are the school leader, the student leader. As a leader, you should try to best behave because other students will take example,” Idris advised. He gave an example. When a teacher must leave the class for a while, a Prefect should help maintain discipline to keep the class in order, not chaotic despite there’s no teacher at presence.

“This is our first Combined Leadership Camp. Before this, Red Cross, Prefect and Scout were practice separately, routine once a week without sleepover,” Feriana explained. Combined Leadership Camp aimed to train independency, nurturing spirit of leadership and encourage team work. Participants slept in the hall on the first floor. Boys and girls were put in different chamber. The students were asked to bring their own dining tools, and do the dishwashing after using them.

They have two meals together, Friday afternoon and Saturday morning, before they went home. The menu for dinner on Friday was red soup, tofu, tempe, crackers and the fruit was melon or water melon. On Saturday, they got to choose the breakfast menu, bread with jam or cereal and milk. During the campfire in the school yard in Friday evening, they were occupied getting close to each other, enjoying the barbeque menu like corn, sausages and chicken wings.

Nathania Nabilah Pratitasari (Tita), a fifth grade student and member of Scout was thrilled with this program. She had two shirts, two trousers, two socks, bathing stuffs, water bottle, dining tools, glasses case, stationary, blank book as ordered by the committee and… sleeping bag!

Her best friend Mumtahina Alam who was in Prefect claimed to be impressed with the campfire session and listening carefully to Idris’s topic. “He said, we should be the role model for other students at school,” the half Indian girl recalled.

Karina Budi Sanjaya, one of their classmates, didn’t raise any objection when being told to clean up the dish after meal. She used to do the dishwashing at home too. Even lately, since they have a maid at home, mom only told her to put the dishes in the wash basin. “Just don’t leave them on the dining table,” said Karina who had a box of snacks for the sleepover.

Idris was aware, nobody can change someone’s character in a one night program. But he was confident that this is a good effort to develop their leadership and indecency. “At least students of SGS are aware that they are leaders at school. Therefore they should behave because others will follow their example. That is the kind of spirit we are trying to grow,” Idris explained.
