Bad Impact of Indulgent Kids

In the 1960’s, psychologist Diana Baumrind conducted experiments to understand how parents differ in their responses to their kids. Baumrind found three main styles of parenting; authoritarian, authoritative, and permissive. Each style has its own effects on kid’s development. This article focuses on permissive parenting style.

Permissive parenting is sometimes known as indulgent or non-directive or lenient parenting. The parents have low expectations for self-control and maturity. So, they make relatively few demands and rarely discipline their kid. They are responsive to their kid, but lack of rules.

This parenting style creates warm relationship between parents and kid. However, as psychologist Dr Rose Mini MPsi warned in a seminar with Superkids Indonesia and Morinaga Platinum, permissive parenting also has bad impact to kid.

Permissive parents are very involved in kid’s life but less likely to control kid’s behavior. Parents tend to be soft, less directive, and do not provide clear rules. For example, at breakfast. Parents only serve kid’s favorite food despite of lacking nutrients. The kid will refuse to eat if do not like the menu.

Kid growing up with indulgent parents is given all of what he/she needs and most of what he/she wants. So, the kid will be lack of self-discipline, sometimes has poor social skills, maybe self-involved and too demanding, feels insecure, and so on. In the future, when he/she face the harsh reality or real world, the kid will have low self-esteem.

So, Superparents, we should have a balanced parenting style. Sometime we may be permissive, but in other time we should be authoritative and give strict rules.
