Homeschooling, Why Not?

For Bharoar Bharan Bragil Nasution, homeschooling is the best solution. His beloved dad, Indrasakti Nasution has long been died, while his lovely mom Sri Andini moves around a lot following office assignment. Bharoar himself is a young golfer with handful of achievement. He must go to practice every day at school hours. Now to keep up with academic progress and maintaining his career, Bharoar enrolls at Homeschooling Kak Seto (HSKS). “He is the youngest and just a kid, he must go with me to any city i’m stationed.” Sri, who just ended her term as chairman of State Court of Sidoarjo last March 2014, reasons.

Fairuza Hanun Razak has a different story. She has been undergoing homeschool since little until now when she is 11 years old. Her  mom Maylia Erta Sutarto has agreed with her dad Nurdin Razak to put kids into homeschooling method. The couple with two daughters and one son considers that both morally and financially, homeschooling has more advantages. Financially, the monthly tuition or pre semester registration, can be use for purchasing home education equipment. “The tools can be passed on to the next generations, and teaching kids to stay discipline of keeping their stuffs,” said Erna.

Morally, according to the couple, parents are supposed to be the one who teaches kids knowledge of good deed and attitude. Erna refuses to give the responsibility up to any other party, including school. So, even that the kids don’t have any other time consuming activities (like making movies or practice exercising) aside for study, Erna and Nurdin don’t feel like enrolling their kids into regular school. “We decide to look for an alternative education system, where me and my husband are the decision maker, facilitator and controller. We apply very humane evaluating method for the kids, free from judgement,” Erna reasoning.

Sooo, just what exactly are the benefit of homeschooling compared to regular school, Supermom? At homeschooling method, kids have more chance to explore their talent and interest. They don’t need to learn every discipline like regular schools do. It’s based on the view that every kid is special and unique. Not everyone are good at math, right? Some kids are excellent at writing, drawing, music or dancing. “Parents get to show the kids their own road to success. How their parents have reached it, that what they need to teach to kids,” said Ayah Edy, the initiator of Indonesian Strong from Home program in his book, “Ayah Edy Menjawab.”

Basically, there are three systems of homeschooling to adopt, Supermom.

  1. Personal Homeschooling or Independent Homeschooling. This one is like what the kiais (Islamic priests) did in the past. Mom or dad teaches their kids without anyone’s help. This can be done if Superparents have much time.
  2. Tutorial Homeschooling, which is have an instructor come to teach or enrolling the kids to a course of any field they like. If the kids like piano, have a piano instructor home or take the kids to a good piano lesson class.
  3. Community. If parents can’t afford to directly involve in teaching, just use the homeschooling community. It’s a group of non working housewife who concern for kids’ education and create some group learning with homeschooling method. It’s a weekly system.

Homeschooling students are also entitled to take UAN (National Final Examination). It means that they will also have certificate to continue studying at university domestic or abroad. Well, interested?
